BRUSHING TEETH THE RIGHT WAY

Home » Bine de stiut » BRUSHING TEETH THE RIGHT WAY

Only 20% of the population brush their teeth the right way. Thorough dental cleansing takes approx. 5 minutes

Our teeth ensure our survival and are the first important step of the intake of food. Teeth perform absolute records every day due to the jaw muscle. Teeth face enormous resistance while comminuting food into easily digestible pieces, they decide for soft and hard foods and permanently face the fluctuations between hot and cold. The care for our teeth is therefore a duty for our survival until old age which is far too often neglected and underestimated. With the problems of caries and periodontitis, the primordinal brushing of teeth is no longer sufficient for the care and conservation nowadays

So if you want to avoid tooth damages and tooth problems you should brush your teeth thrice a day. A very thorough dental care is at least important once a day which includes a very thorough cleansing of all interdental spaces. However, a removal of scraps of food after the intake of food is basically advisable.

But the majority of people do not adhere to this. As dental cleansing takes approx. five minutes and can hardly be carried out thoroughly on the way or at work, if at all, only 20 % brush their teeth once a day for approx. 2 minutes.

There are no general rules for toothbrushing as for example persons with exposed tooth necks or many bridges have to use other techniques than persons with health teeth. The individual recommendation can only be made by a dentist after a detailed diagnosis.

Do not press too hard while brushing your teeth

It is the prime principle for everyone to brush just with little pressure as the toothbrush is not a scrubbing brush. One should also never just brush back and forth sideways or just up and down as this presses tooth films even deeper into the interdental spaces.

Thorough dental care is of course not always compatible with professional everyday life. But there are also accessories for this purpose. Different companies have introduced dental care chewing gums to the market. They promote the flow of saliva which neutralises the acids of scraps of food and bacteria, which are produced in the oral area during the intake of food, in turn. However, this accessory can only be considered an exception as it does certainly not replace dental cleaning with a toothbrush.

Due to the introduction of the electric toothbrush the awareness for dental care has improved rapidly within the past years. With an electric toothbrush a much more thorough and gentle dental cleaning can be obtained for the teeth and the gum within a shorter period of time.

Of course the right handling of an electric toothbrush has to be learned and practised. People who are a bit unskillful should therefore decide to use a sonic toothbrush. Once the brushing technique has been refined a rotating brush with a smaller head can of course also be purchased later. This type of brush is more suitable, not just for dental care, but also for the necessary massage of the gum.

A table spoon as a tool for tongue cleaning

Most people are not aware that tongue cleaning is an important element of mouth and oral care. Especially bad breath is caused by tongue films as many bacteria develop and breed especially in this area. Special tongue cleaners which are meant for this purpose are available in pharmacies. They should be placed on the tongue after toothbrushing. Of course tongue cleaners can also be used in between. In case there are no tongue cleaners at hand it is possible to remove the annoying tongue film with a table spoon. The inside of the table spoon is moved from the back in the direction of the tip of the tongue. This is how the films are scraped off. In this context it is important that the pressure of the spoon on the tongue is well-dosed. When the pressure is too strong it causes irritations which can in turn cause swellings and small injuries of the tongue surface.-

Of course it is important to examine the whole oral area in regular intervals. A professional dental cleaning is advisable, at least biannually. This service is offered by most dental practices. The costs for a professional dental cleaning are not paid by health insurances. It is therefore always advisable to collect offers from different dentists. A thorough dental cleaning takes about one hour. A total absence of films should be its objective. Studies have revealed that the tooth substance and the teeth remain healthy for a much longer period and dental treatments are less often necessary by means of regular dental cleaning.

The correct diet protects and maintains teeth

Injuries on teeth, the gum or the whole oral area should be already excluded and prevented by means of the correct diet. Nowadays more and more healthy foods are offered which include tooth-protecting, natural substances. Avocados, cheese, raw onions or liquorice count among these tooth-protecting foods. Even green tea works preventively. Vitamine C and D are especially good for the teeth and gum.

Correct dental care, but please shaken

The best method of toothbrushing is the shaking technique. The toothbrush should be placed at a slightly diagonal angle towards the edge of the gum. A part of the brush will then touch the tooth and another part the gum. For the most stubborn bacteria are situated at the edge of the gum. Gently move the toothbrush on the spot and shake off the stubborn films. Then proceed to the chewing surface of the tooth and remove the films in the same way. In this context it is important to systematically work on each single tooth. Start cleaning from outside at the upper teeth and initially concentrate on the back teeth and the incisors. Use the same technique for the lower teeth. The chewing surfaces are used towards the end of the dental cleaning.
